Brand New Tokio Hotel feature on cosmo girl

Tokio Hotel five questionsFormerly the group Devilish, Bill, Tom, Gustav, and Georg now make up Tokio Hotel — and the uber-cuties from Germany are taking the U.S. by storm! I caught up with them at their recent New York City show at The Fillmore at Irving Plaza (a venue where most rock legends have performed), where the line to get in was hundreds deep and, according to one fan, people were waiting for hours to get a spot in front of the stage.

Hey, guys! It must be really exciting to perform in New York. Do you love the city?

Bill and Georg:
Very! Yeah, we like it, but we love L.A. too, with the warm weather, sunshine, and big houses.

What’s the difference between your European fan base and your U.S. one?

Bill:
We were really surprised when we came to North America because we expected it to be different than in Germany. We expected people to be calm, laid-back, and checking us out from a distance. But as soon as we got onstage here, everyone got really excited and started to yell and scream the way we were used to from home. We were really surprised. Having fans like that gives us a lot of power and energy when we’re onstage. We love it! It was such a shock that our shows here are selling out. It’s more than we ever expected.

That’s pretty amazing to be selling out shows here in the U.S. on your first North American tour.

Bill:
Yeah. We’re so excited.

So tell me, who were your musical influences?

Bill:
We couldn’t find a single common influence.

Tom:
I influenced them all.

Bill, Gustav, Georg:
Ha!

Bill:
We listen to so many different kinds of music. Tom only listens to German hip-hop, but I listen to a lot of rock, so we couldn’t really agree on one band that influenced us. Everyone brought his own style to the group, even if Georg doesn’t have any style [rest of band laughs]. What we created with Tokio Hotel was just our common ground of liking a variety of bands. We wanted that to influence our music.

How’d you get the name?

Bill:
[Band laughs simultaneously]
The reason everyone laughed is because now you’re getting into the dark past. We used to go by a different name – Devilish, but that was all Bill’s idea. To tell you the truth, Devilish didn’t have any meaning. We tried to remember why we chose that name, but couldn’t. When we started to get deals with record companies, we thought it was time to find a name that fits and one we all liked. We love New York and L.A. because they’re really big cities, and we chose Tokio [the German spelling of Tokyo] because it’s a wicked place. Then we wanted to find a symbol that represented our lives, and we came up with Hotel because we’re living out of hotels these days. Our lives are packed in our suitcases and we always carry them behind us.

How would you describe your personal style?

Gustav:
Well, we’ve got a womanizer, a comedian, a bodyguard… [the whole band starts to laugh]. Actually, no, we’re not about rules – we didn’t want to create one image.

Bill:
Yeah, if we had to do that, Georg wouldn’t even be here today [band laughs]. We’re not about playing any characters — we’re just us, just being ourselves. What you see is what you get. If you look at old pictures of us from when we were called Devilish, you will see how everyone started to find his own style. That’s what we’re about.

What would your advice be to anyone who wanted to get a start in music?

Bill:
We hate to be in the position of telling people what to do because when we started, people who were older and had been in the business a while would tell us how we should act and what we should do, and we didn’t like that. Everyone has to make their own decisions and go through their own experience – find out for yourself. Everyone has to find their way. The only thing I would say is that it’s important to play live, go onstage, and have fun because that’s what it’s all about. And it’s important to make mistakes. That’s what we did and still do. Georg is still making 10 to 15 mistakes every day [band laughs]. Just do your thing!

What’s your favorite thing to do online?

Tom:
[laughing] I’m not sure you want to know! Actually, I basically check e-mail and watch videos.

Georg:
Yeah, I watch videos. I just watched Scream.

Gustav:
I just watch a video where the filmmakers raced an Audi against a BMW. The BMW won.

Tom:
Ready, Set, Go video. Check it out!

Tokio Hotel in Rock in Rio Lisbon ! 2008

Tokio Hotel no Rock in Rio-Lisboa

A German band will climb to the World Stage on June 1, the third day of the biggest festival of music.

This young quartet, with only three discs edited, - two in German ( "Schrei" of 2005 and "Zimmer 483," 2007) and one in English ( "Scream"), which is a compilation of the two albums but edited sung in English - has already won some of the most important awards for music and managed to reach the top of the sales charts in many countries.

The great novelty of the show is the junction of Xutos the Big Band, (the orchestra of metals of the Hot Club of Lisbon), 21 recreating classic themes of his repertoire, in a single show. They are almost two hours of concert where Xutos e Pontapés being accompanied by an orchestra of 13 pieces of breath, led by Maestro Pedro Moreira (who also was in charge of arrangements), giving a completely different perspective of the concert behavior.

This initiative unprecedented in the career of Xutos, it is once again a rock in the pond, which shows that they have the capacity to renew, reinvent and surprise the fans, a perfect symbiosis between orchestra and band.

The issues most emblematic and true anthems appear with a roupagem completely different. The concert opens with "I am not the One" and ends with the inevitable "Container", a total of 21 subjects interpreted by the band, Tim, Kalú, Zé Pedro, Cabeleira and Gui. The eternal anthems of Xutos, "Man of the rudder," "Circo, Feras", "My Casinha", "Day of St. Receive," "Remar Remar", "In the My Way," interpreted with the orchestra gave a touch unique and very special to these songs.

Note that in this day are also confirmed the actions of Joss Stone and Rod Stewart.

Tokio Hotel Canada Newsletter ....IT'S a hilarious interview

Hi everyone,
This is a pretty long newsletter because there is amazing Tokio Hotel action happening in Canada!
We’ll talk about TH’s official “Ready, Set, Go” Day in Canada, you can read what the guys said in response to the Top 6 questions submitted by fans and you’ll be the first to know the track list for Tokio Hotel’s Canadian “Scream” album…enjoy reading!

Friday, March 7th 2008: OFFICIAL “READY, SET, GO!” Day in CANADA
On March 4th “Ready, Set, Go!” will be officially released on iTunes Canada…here is what we have in mind for this release:
We want to name the Friday after the release (March 7th 2008) the OFFICIAL “READY, SET, GO!” DAY in CANADA. Bill, Tom, Gustav and Georg have been waiting for this moment for a long time and are beside themselves with excitement. So let’s show the guys just how many Tokio Hotel fans there really are in Canada and turn FRIDAY, MARCH 7th into an unforgettable day for them! To do this we have to combine forces and head over to iTunes and get the track EXACTLY on Friday, March 7th (…not one or two days before or later. It has to be on March 7th so we can make a real impact together  let’s ROCK the iTunes CHARTS!)

Top 6 Fan Questions for Tokio Hotel by Canadian fans:
Over the month of January you guys submitted questions you always wanted to ask Bill, Tom, Gustav & Georg. Here are their answers to the Top 6 questions:

Question by Bensu S.
What type of girls do you guys look for and do you guys think personality is more important than looks or is it the other way around? Also what type of personality and looks do you want to find in a girl?

Bill: The most important thing is a girl’s personality. I intuitively look at a girl’s hands when I meet her for the first time. But, even the most beautiful hands don’t help if our personalities don’t go together…there has to be a chemistry that makes it work.
Speaking of personality; she has to be honest, funny and most importantly faithful. I can’t picture having a relationship with a girl that doesn’t have these qualities…especially faithfulness!

Tom: It totally depends on what I have in mind for the girl. Are we talking about a long term relationship or just a one-night-stand? In general I don’t want to restrict myself to a certain personality type…doing so could lead to missed opportunities ;-)

Question by Chriasiana A.
If you could choose to star in any movie role, what would it be?

Tom: I really want to be Brad Pitt in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” because I could have a relationship with Angelina Jolie and have the best sex ever….well, to be precise, she would have the best sex ever.

Bill: I think Georg wants to star in “Lord of the Rings” since his nick name is “Hobbit”. He would blend in with the other hobbits and not attract so much attention to himself.

Question by Maria B.
Does it make you happy to see so many fans support the band in front of your hotels, etc… ????

Bill: Absolutely! For instance on our final Europe Tour concert in Essen, Germany, our fans cried because they were so happy to see us. They had posters saying: “Great to have you back” or “We missed you so much”. It really touches me and it’s an incredible feeling to be welcomed like that!

Tom: Our fans are not just waiting for us at the hotel or at our concerts. They are present all the time…no matter where we go. As a band this is the best feeling ever!

Question by Cheyenne
What is the best Christmas present you received?

Tom: The best present? I guess .. this is probably true for all of us .. we gave the best present to ourselves by spending our vacation time with our family and we really enjoyed ourselves…it feels like we haven’t spent enough time with them over the last year!

Georg: Yes, that vacation was definitely it! We looked forward to that time and spent the holiday on some beaches with our families to relax.

Bill: We needed the time off and it was the only vacation time we had in 2007. Now we can start again with renewed energy since we’re currently occupied with the planning and rehearsing for our upcoming concerts.

Question by CB L.
For all my 4 TH guys, this may be a strange question but it is very fun and interesting. So, if your perfect girl could be any fruit, which fruit would she be? Say the first thing that pops into your head!

Tom: Only one fruit? Sorry, can’t limit my dream girl to only one :-) I can tell you what fruits would be involved. Two beautiful honey melons and an apple which stands for a well formed ass. I think those are the most important ones that should be involved.

Georg: She certainly should NOT look like a watermelon.

Gustav: I agree with Georg!

Bill: I love pineapple, grapes and water melons   so some kind of fruit mix would be great!

Question by Cindy R.
What happened to Jumbi, your toy airplane? Do you still have it? If so, where is it now?

Bill: Oh yeah, I still have Jumbi. I guess you guys know him from the scene that was included on our “Zimmer 483   LIVE in Europe” DVD. I learned my lesson from that. For the upcoming Europe Tour in March, we’ll definitely bring more than just the one Jumbi along with us - just to be on the safe side. I mean our rescue mission next time might not be as successful as the one you saw. You never know, so we’ll get some more planes and Jumbi will have some brothers and sisters ;-)

March 25th 2008: Track list for Tokio Hotel’s “Scream” Album
It’s less than a month now till Tokio Hotel’s album “Scream” will hit the stores all over Canada and we have the exclusive track list right now for you!

Rahav Segev for The New York Times ...A Wild Welcome to a German Teen Pop Band

Tokio Hotel is led by Bill Kaulitz.

And if you had shown up at the Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza a few hours later for the concert that drew such an eager crowd ... well, you might still have wondered what was going on.

The occasion was the first New York performance by Tokio Hotel, a German act that scrambles musical categories in a way that feels ideally suited to the current era. Why shouldn’t fans go nuts for a goth punk boy band influenced by the darkly theatrical love songs of HIM (from Finland) and AFI (from California) and led by a sexy androgyne with spectacular hair? Why shouldn’t the members of Tokio Hotel be given a chance to bring their not quite idiomatic refrains  “We are here tonight/Leave the world aside” to the United States?

Now they have that chance. In April they plan to release their first American album, “Scream” (Cherrytree/Interscope). And their Monday performance was one of a few concerts  including one in Los Angeles last Friday  designed to introduce the band in this country. (Tokio Hotel regularly tops the charts in Germany and has had hits throughout Europe.) On Monday night no introduction was needed; most of those fans had already discovered the band online.

To watch Tokio Hotel live is to gaze at that gender-bending singer, who answers to the disappointingly unglamorous name of Bill Kaulitz. He is 18, and he looks like an anime version of Christian Siriano, the precocious star of this season’s “Project Runway.”

In his soft, pleading voice you can hear some of the complications of life as a teen idol: to his fans he’s not only a sex symbol but also a potential confidant and maybe a role model; he is an intermediate figure, standing between the girls in the crowd and the men in the band. But compared with Mr. Kaulitz, those band members (including his identical but very differently styled twin, Tom Kaulitz) couldn’t help but seem underwhelming. As they trudged, sometimes clumsily, through a short set, they seemed a lot less sophisticated than the skinny guy in front, who looks as if he has been honing his stage act since birth. If this concert was oddly delightful from start to finish, thank Bill Kaulitz, who should, with any luck, be thrilling and perplexing young Americans for the rest of the year.

During the best songs like “Monsoon,” one of the band’s biggest hits  the contrast between singer and band was charming. “Monsoon” is effective because it’s surprisingly restrained: the music stays quiet, and the band doesn’t really kick in until after the second chorus. And when the noise finally came, there was a pleasing sense of devolution, as a teen-pop juggernaut with eyes on an American prize regressed into an exuberant garage band, making a gleeful racket.

February 20, 2008

Tom Kaulitz says “Fans have to learn to control themselves.”

Frankly, it doesn’t bother me if people scratch me in the back or pull my clothes during a concert…But more seriously, we’ve already heard alarming stories about fans fighting during our concerts or in front of our hotels. Occasionally, when I’m on stage, I’ll even pick out and locate the fans who are behaving badly. Sometimes I want to just put down my guitar and ask them to calm down and behave, but that might really kill the atmosphere. The fans have to learn to control themselves. We’re just normal guys, and, frankly, if they really knew me, they wouldn’t want to see me so badly!

Live Review: Tokio Hotel - The Roxy, Hollywood

Who said glam is dead?

Last Friday, Germany’s Tokio Hotel sent a shockwave through The Roxy in West Hollywood, reviving the ’80s in the process. Their first U.S. show proved rapturous for the tween set in the crowd, and served as a reminder of how fun rock and roll can be for the rest of us. Already a veritable European sensation, Tokio Hotel’s US debut Scream drops in April on Interscope, but that didn’t stop the crowd from singing every lyric to every song. From the early afternoon, teenage girls lined up down Sunset Boulevard with posters declaring their dedication to the European rock sensation. The strip came alive again that night, and Facebook Nation got its Bon Jovi.

The band’s hour long set was culled primarily from Scream. Since the album already saw release in Europe, the songs weren’t new to the crowd. The band kicked off the show with a fast and furious rendition of “Ready, Set, Go!” The flurry of screams nearly drowned out singer Bill Kaulitz’s vocals, but the band still sounded tight. Bill’s twin brother Tom took up a Nikki Sixx style pose shredding his licks right through “Don’t Jump” and “Scream.” He exuded a cock rock cool, as he winked at various girls in the audience.

If the phenomenal Black Tide are the new Guns N’ Roses, then Tokio Hotel are definitely the new Bon Jovi. As a frontman, Bill knows how to play to his crowd. Right before “Don’t Jump,” he proclaimed, “It’s so good to be here in Los Angeles! We’ve come all the way from Germany to be with you here, tonight!” Cuts like “Breakaway” and “By Your Side” elicited the biggest cheers, and the band were gods to those teen girls.

At certain parts of the set, it was interesting to see all of these kids holding up cell phones instead of the lighters their parents probably held up during Poison shows in the ’80s. What 13 year old needed a cell phone in rock’s heyday? It just goes to show how much has changed. Right before the band went on, two girls were talking about Tokio Hotel. “They’re so great to their fans; they love us!,” exclaimed a girl that couldn’t have been older than 14. She continued, “Because the show’s supposed to be out around 10, my mom said I could go.” At least it wasn’t a school night.

Tom is the blogger at Alloy.com

We came to Canada last Thursday, and we are in Toronto right now. I’m sitting in my hotel room, thinking about being here and I have to say we love it. We’ve done two performances, one in Montreal on Saturday and one in Toronto on Sunday night. In between that, we did a lot interviews. We were really surprised when we got here   we expected that no one would really know us. We saw ourselves selling tickets for our shows on the streets to have at least a couple of people show up, but both shows sold out!!! Our fans were waiting for us everywhere   screaming, cheering, talking in German, singing our songs, and, might I add, were very good looking! I saw a lot of beautiful girls in both cities, which made me very happy!

Today, we went to the CN Tower, that was exciting  it’s sooo high. Georg didn’t feel that well because he’s afraid of heights, but come to think of it, he’s usually afraid of something. Anyway, afterward we went to MuchMusic, where we were guests on a show. We taught the hosts some German words (that was really funny) and performed “Ready Set Go” live    that was cool, too.

Well, I have to go ‘cause I need to pack my stuff. We’re flying to L.A. tomorrow. You should see my room  my clothes are everywhere, it will take me hours to pack.

Well, talk to you soon  take care!

 Tom

POP MUSIC REVIEW

Live: Tokio Hotel
By Mikael Wood, Special to The Times
February 18, 2008
Standing onstage Friday at the Roxy in front of a crowd of screaming teenage girls and schmoozing music biz types, Bill Kaulitz of Germany's Tokio Hotel announced that he'd brought something from halfway across the world.

Vintage lederhosen? A handmade cuckoo clock? A rare species of gummy bear?

No, it was "Totgeliebt," one of the German language hits that's propelled the young emo glam outfit to Hannah Montana style superstardom in Europe. Like everything else by Tokio Hotel, "Totgeliebt" (Love Is Dead) sounded like the Jonas Brothers covering Guns N' Roses, the latest iteration of the deathless musical genre known as hair metal. (Tokio Hotel emphasizes the hair more than the metal: Kaulitz sports an outsized fright wig; his guitarist brother Tom wears a bundle of dreadlocks.)

The Kaulitzes and their two regular guy mates were at the Roxy for the first of three U.S. gigs ahead of the release later this year of "Scream," which collects (and translates into English) 12 tunes from their two German albums. That everyone in the audience knew the words to the songs is testament to the irrelevance of release dates in the Internet Age.

Kaulitz offered little in the way of stage banter ("We'll be back," he promised near the end, sounding a like a pint size Governator), but what could he have said that Tokio Hotel's relentlessly crafty music  " or his strangely balletic rock god stage moves  " didn't communicate more clearly?

Minus the studio sweetening on "Scream," the ballads suffered Friday in comparison to the rockers. But if they graduate to arenas the way they have in Germany, they'll have the voices of thousands of fans to fill in all the empty spaces.

BILL's MSG .....The night for the travel to north-America

Good morning everyone!
My name is Bill Kaulitz, and I'm the lead singer of Tokio Hotel -– a German rock band. It's 2:30 on Thursday morning, and the band members (my twin brother Tom, Gustav, and Georg), and I just got back to our hotel in Berlin. We had a great night at a major TV award show here in Germany. We got an award for "Best Music -- National" and performed our song "1000 Meere." It was awesome! Aside from our band, there were other guests like Hillary Swank and Robert De Niro! It was an interesting experience to meet these people in person, especially after having seen so many of their movies.

It's 2:40 a.m. now, and I better get going…still have to pack my suitcase for tomorrow. We have to leave the hotel at 5:20 a.m. to get to the Berlin airport. Our destination is Montreal, Canada to play our FIRST North American show EVER on Saturday. It's pretty exciting, but scary at the same time. In the last two years, we've performed a lot all over Europe, but now we're ready to cross the Atlantic and give it our best shot there. It's a dream come true for us to be given this opportunity.

Stay tuned – I'll let you know how the first concert went. Oh god, it's ten to three now…have to go!

Take care and bye.

Bill

Tokio Hotel Interview — February 2008 13/02/2008

If you are a European citizen, odds are you’ve heard of them... a lot! American? Give them a few weeks and you’ll see what the huge deal is about. Tokio Hotel are twins Bill and Tom Kaulitz, respectively singing and on guitar, bass player Georg Listing, and drummer Gustav Schäfer.

What’s so special about them? After two albums, ‘Schrei’, and more recently ‘Zimmer 483’, they already are the most successful band the German market has seen for many decades. Just as the albums did, their DVD sold much more than anyone ever expected, and not only in Germany, but all around the globe.

Did we mention they achieved all this and they’re not even 20 yet?

Not only did Tokio Hotel reach the top of the German charts; they also found themselves rocking the charts of France and Austria. Knowing no such thing as a language barrier, they toured all of Europe with great success. Now that their songs have been translated and recorded in English, they decided it was time to broaden their horizons even more.

The Tokio Hotel storm has now reached America, selling out venues in a few hours time... and this is only the beginning!

They squeezed in their tight schedule an email interview with us, and here is what they had to say.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard of you?

Tom: In general it’s German Rock. It’s very guitar and drum driven….really energetic. We always tried to create our own sound, one that’s unique to Tokio Hotel. It’s hard to describe, but you’ll hear in the beginning of all our songs that it’s recognizably Tokio Hotel.

Can you tell us a bit more about the band’s plans for the US and Canada?

Tom: We are very excited that people from the US and Canada are interested in us and our music. I mean, we are a German band and now we’ve had the opportunity to go overseas. That’s incredible and unusual for German bands.
Bill: We don’t really have a master plan or any goals set. We just want to play LIVE as much as we’re able to, meet our fans, take a chance and try to enjoy it all.

What are you looking forward to seeing in North America?

Bill: We were in New York and L.A. last year…absolutely loved it. We are real fans of big cities and they were both what we expected. We’ve already played two shows - one in Montreal and one in Toronto. The fans were incredible. We didn’t expected anyone to know us and then we got this big cheering welcome – it was fantastic.
Tom (smiles): And I have to say, from what I’ve seen so far, the girls have been really pretty – definitely an option for getting some action.

You already have a very widespread fanbase in Europe. Do you think American fans will differ from a European audience? How?

Bill: It’s hard to tell the difference between each country since each single fan shows his own personality in unique ways. I like to call our fans very energetic. They are very engaged and close to us – they live this life with us and travel with us. Wherever we go, they are always there. As far as we’ve noticed from Internet, the American fans seem to share that, which is wicked. We are so exited and coming over here feels like doing it all for the very first time. We can’t wait to meet them.
Tom (laughing): Yeah, and there are lots of beautiful girls all over the world too.

On a darker note, you have been accused of being “made to sell” because of working with writers and composers. How do you feel about this? What are your views on the matter?

Bill: We actually don’t care about that too much.
Tom: It’s the way things work in the music biz. As soon as you are successful, especially if it happens within a short time as it did with us, (we’ve been around for only 2.5 years) people think: stop, that must be made.
Bill (laughing): Yes, but all we can say is our band has been together for seven years. I started writing when I was about seven, back then Tom and I stared writing music as well. After that we met Georg and Gustav and became a band. What you see and hear today, is what we’ve worked for over the last seven years.

In terms of your career, what are you the most proud of?

Tom: I wouldn’t call it proud but it’s what we are happy about. I remember when we started out, we played in clubs where only five people showed up – and they weren’t interested in us, they just wanted to have a beer. But now we are playing shows in Canada and the States and we’re getting ready for our third European tour – it’s mind blowing! It’s all we ever wanted: to travel and play live as much as possible. People are connecting to us! We hope to do that as long as possible…ideally for the rest of our lives.

You all have very different styles, how important is the image of the band to you?

Bill: We always were different. If you look at old pictures of the band you can tell how each of us has developed and we each started to create our own style from early on. When we got our record deal, the most important thing for us was that we could be ourselves and dress the way we wanted. We didn’t want to have a stylist to tell us what to wear. That’s not us. I think our music and personality go together. We never wanted to wear masks and pretend to be something we are not. So what you see is who we are and that’s what you get.

What is the funniest or strangest rumour you have heard about yourself?

Bill: I don’t even know where to start. There have been so many going around. Once we found one that said I killed myself in my hotel room. Another said on my 18th birthday I got drunk and came out of the closet on an Internet forum – that was hilarious.
Tom (laughing): No, the funniest was the announcement that the other three aren’t virgins anymore!

What are you currently listening to?

Tom: We all listen to very different music. I only listen to German HipHop.
Bill: I listen to a variety of stuff like Nena, Green Day, Coldplay, Kane, Placebo…it depends on my mood.
Gustav: I love Metallica and Foo Fighters.
Georg: I still like Oasis and Fall Out Boy.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

Tom: Well, you need to ask the others – they are learning about me every day.
All: Ohhhhhh!
Bill: Did you know that Georg’s full name is Georg Moritz Hagen?

Thank you very much for doing this interview! We wish you all the best for the future. Any last words for your American fans?

Bill: We want to thank all our fans for supporting us - for making it possible to come over here and play LIVE. We are so excited about the feedback we’re getting from you all and we can’t wait to see you! Thanks so much!

MuchMusic's interview with TOKIO HOTEL .

Me with Tokio Hotel before their performance on MOD

Today was the day. I put on my lederhosen, climbed to the top of the Alps, and met up with the very German Bill, Tom, Gustav & Georg of TOKIO HOTEL for a quick sit-down interview. I asked some of my own questions and also a few from the many suggestions that you - the super fans - suggested. Turns out the boys were incredibly down to earth and fun. The following is how it all went down:

First off, Claudia Schiffer or Heidi Klum?

All: Heidi Klum!

Why?

Bill: We are all big fans of Heidi Klum.

Tom: She's great.

Bill: Yeah, she simply looks great. She's definitely our favourite model, right?

Georg: Yeah.

[All nod in agreement]

Bratwurst or Schnitzel?

All: Schnitzel!

Oh, wow. I would've said Bratwurst.

Bill: Well actually Schnitzel and Bratwurst look pretty good together.

Tom: I don't really like Bratwurst.

Bill: Yeah, me neither.

Gustav: Yeah, me neither.

Georg: Well sometimes it's not so bad.

Tom: I just don't like a big "wurst", but maybe it's because I have such a big "wurst".

Bill: [groans, rolls eyes]

Tom: But no, I don't really like Bratwurst.

What do you first think of when you hear the word 'Canada'?

Gustav: Maple leaf.

Bill: Hm. And cold.

All: Yeah, cold.

Bill: Especially right now. Oh - and definitely the CN Tower.

Did you guys already go up in it?

Bill: Yup! We were just there!

How do your Canadian fans compare to your German fans?

Bill: I don't think you can categorize fans by country like that. I mean, I think each fan is in itself different and everyone has their own personality but regardless, we are all very excited about our fans here in Canada. We were just in Montreal and now here in Toronto and the support, it's been quite incredible, the concerts were great. We're really enjoying ourselves - it's been a great start.

What is it like playing these smaller gigs in North America, when compared with the bigger concerts in Germany?

Tom: Well it's definitely been a nice change because here we have our small gigs but then directly after this we are going on our European tour where things will be much bigger. But it's been a while since we've played in small clubs and it's a lot of fun. Both concerts in Montreal and Toronto were great.

Georg: And it's definitely reminiscent of when we were younger and new to it all, like when we started out playing the small clubs in Magdeburg.

Bill: Yeah, it's cool.

Can you teach me some German slang?

[All laugh]

I know "Scheize," "Arschloch," "Fick."

Bill: Well those are already the most important ones.

George: Yeah, "Scheize" and "Arschloch" are already pretty good.

Well what do I need to know to be cool?

Bill: Oh, God.

Tom: That's always really hard.

Bill: Well we say things like instead of saying "Wie geht es dir?" (How are you?) you'd say "Was geht?" And we always actually say "Tierisch". "Tierisch" is a word you would never really use, but we say it when we think something's really cool.

Gustav: Yeah, like "Tom always looks Tierisch."

Bill: Yeah, so if you used that word, people would think, "Ok, he's from around here."

Tom: And to greet someone, you can also say "Fick mich." Simply walk by them and say "Hey! Fick mich!"

[All laugh]

What was the first record you bought with your own money?

Bill: For me it was a Nena CD.

Nena? Oh right - 99 Luftballons.

Georg: For me it was a CD from Oasis.

Gustav: Metallica - the black album.

Tom: Definitely Aerosmith.

What's your favourite music video?

Georg: Well Ready, Set, Go from Tokio Hotel is great.

Tom: Yeah, if Ready, Set, Go isn't on rotation yet it should be.

Georg: Heavy Rotation.

Tom: Yeah, definitely. But other than that, I also really like...

Georg: Monsoon?

Yeah, it's "Tierisch".

[All laugh]

Gustav: Ah! Exactly!

What's a fun trivia fact that most people wouldn't know about you?

Tom: Well the fact that Georg actually has two other names, is not that well-known. Georg's actual name is...

Tom & Bill: Georg Mortiz Hagen Listing!

Georg: [not impressed] "Tierisch" funny.

Bill: And Gustav's name is...

Tom & Bill: Gustav Klaus Wolfgang Schafer!

Gustav: Shit.

Tom: My second name is Don. Tom the Don.

[All laugh]

What's something that's super popular in Germany that isn't popular here?

Bill: Well until now, Tokio Hotel.

[All laugh]

Techno?

Bill: Techno? You don't listen to techno?

Not really.

Gustav: That's for the best.

Bill: Well in Germany there are quite a few techno clubs but I guess that's not even that popular anymore. Hm. I have no idea.

Do you have any weird talents?

Bill: Georg can cramp his fingers in a really wierd way.

Georg: Yeah [demonstrates]

Bill: Ugh!

[All laugh]

Georg: That's the only thing I'm good at.

Bill: Yeah, yeah.

What bad habits do you have?

Bill: Habits? Hm. Well I can't keep my legs still.

Nervous?

Georg: No, that's definitely just a tick.

Bill: Yeah, it's a tick. I'm definitely always shaking something. I can't sit still.

Tom: Hm - what kind of habits do I have...? None really. Well, it's hard for me to find any faults. [All groan]. Georg has the habit of messing up in concert.

Bill: And he's always late. Georg is always late. And Gustav is a "Tierisch" bitch.

Gustav: See, there "Tierisch" is used differently.

All: Negative.

Gustav: Well it can be both negative and really positive.

Tom: And with me, it's really hard to come up with something. I don't have any bad habits.

Georg: [rolls eyes] Yeah, none.

With such sudden success, how do you all keep your egos in check?

Georg: Now that's a question for Tom. Ego! How do you keep your ego under control?

Tom: I spend most of my time with women. And that pulls me back to earth a bit.

[All laugh]

Bill: I think we all keep each other in check. We've known each other for 7 years now and because we know each other so well we can watch out for each other and make sure no one gets out of control. But, we have to regularly watch out for Georg.

Georg: [rolls eyes] Yeah, OK.

What are some modern pop songs that are 'earworms' for you - songs that get stuck in your head?

Georg: [starts humming Ready, Set, Go - everyone joins in] What was the name of that song again...?

[All laugh]

Tom: I really liked [One Republic's] Apologize.

[All agree]

Bill: Yeah, Apologize - I think it is still number one or something in Germany. I can never get it out of my head.

Are there ever a lot of disagreements between group members?

Bill: Yeah, definitely. But most of the time we understand each other, and other times we are too busy to fight - we're constantly on the go - but yes, we fight. It's something that happens when on tour. But I must say, we all bounce back quickly - we understand each other well.

And finally, how's Knut?

Bill: Knut?

All: KNUT!

Gustav: There's a new one now! Her name is Flocke.

Georg: Yeah, Knut's totally savage now. No one can go in the pen with him anymore.

Bill: Yeah, he's huge.
